Excellence in Product Innovation

Recognises a business that has achieved success by identifying and then developing or utilising an innovative product that has greatly impacted the business. Product Innovation is aimed at a business that is offering or utilising a product that is unique, advances the civil environment and has innovation at its core.

Innovation is a key part of the civil contracting industry and we might come across it in contexts such as:

  • Provided an idea to help win a competitive tender
  • Overcame a real problem during a project
  • Provided a superior outcome for a Client
  • Made more money or significantly reduced a loss on a project
  • Challenged the status quo
  • Helped the community
  • Improved the running of a company, addressed staff frustration
  • Improved staff relations, training, diversity of people

ENTRY QUESTIONS

Describe the innovation and explain how it is unique/original and relevant to the category. Limited to 500 words.15%

·        How did you identify and then implement your innovation? 

·        How are you measuring the success and value of the innovation? 

·        How are you maximising the benefits of the innovation to support further growth?  Is it still under development? 

·        What have been the barriers to adopting the innovation and how did you overcome them? – e.g. staff, customers, internal process 

·        Describe any risks or challenges your business faced when introducing this innovation. How did you manage them? What did you learn? 

·        Explain how your innovation benefits, either now and/or in the future, the civil contracting industry. 

·        Outline and explain other significant business achievements from the last 12-18 months related to the innovation (e.g. sales trends, sales figures, gross or net profit). What do you attribute these to? 

·        Is the innovation adapted from existing technology or developed from scratch? 

·        There is no innovation and creativity without failure.  How did trial and error benefit the evolution of the innovation?

You may submit electronic files that demonstrate your innovation. These may include: 

·        a video showing your innovation in action – this does not need to be professionally produced. We suggest that you explain your innovation/what is being shown as you record the video. Mobile phone recordings are acceptable provided that the picture and sound are clear. 

·        presentation slides that have been used within your company to explain the change from business-as-usual and/or the introduction of new technology. 

·        photos 

·        other documents which show how you have developed and/or implemented your innovation.
